Ultimate Multi-Timeframe Moving Average (MTF MA)

Ultimate Multi-Timeframe Moving Average is a flexible technical indicator that allows traders to analyze price trends using multiple types of moving averages and multiple timeframes within a single chart.

The indicator supports eight different moving average algorithms, optional dual-MA setups, trend coloring, and cross signals, making it suitable for trend trading, pullback strategies, and multi-timeframe analysis.

Originally inspired by the well-known TradingView script by ChrisMoody, this version has been carefully re-implemented and optimized for the TakeProfit platform using the Indie scripting language, with cleaner calculations and improved internal performance.

Key Features

1. Eight Moving Average Types

The indicator supports a wide range of popular smoothing methods used in technical analysis:

  • Simple Moving Average (SMA)
  • Exponential Moving Average (EMA)
  • Weighted Moving Average (WMA)
  • Hull Moving Average (HMA) – fast trend detection
  • Volume-Weighted Moving Average (VWMA)
  • RMA (Running Moving Average)
  • TEMA (Triple Exponential Moving Average) – reduced lag
  • Tilson T3 – smooth trend filtering

This allows traders to experiment with different smoothing behaviors depending on their trading strategy.

2. Multi-Timeframe Moving Average (MTF)

You can calculate the moving average using:

  • the current chart timeframe, or
  • a higher or lower timeframe.

Examples:

  • Use a 1H MA while trading on a 5-minute chart
  • Track the daily trend on intraday charts
  • Combine short-term entries with higher timeframe bias

This is particularly useful for multi-timeframe trend confirmation.

3. Dual Moving Average Setup

The indicator optionally supports two moving averages simultaneously, enabling classic MA-based strategies:

  • fast vs slow MA crossover systems
  • dynamic support and resistance zones
  • trend confirmation filters

You can independently configure:

  • MA type
  • MA length
  • T3 parameters
  • visual settings

for each moving average.

4. Moving Average Cross Signals

When both MAs are enabled, the indicator can mark cross events directly on the chart.

These signals are commonly used in strategies such as:

  • trend reversals
  • momentum confirmation
  • moving average crossover systems

5. Price-Cross Highlighting

The indicator can highlight bars when price crosses a selected moving average.

This helps identify:

  • momentum shifts
  • breakout conditions
  • potential entry triggers

Price-cross highlighting can be enabled separately for each moving average.

6. Trend Direction Coloring

Moving averages can automatically change color based on slope direction:

  • Green – upward trend
  • Red – downward trend

A smoothing parameter allows traders to control how sensitive the color change should be.

This visual feedback helps quickly identify trend conditions without manually inspecting slope values.

Typical Use Cases

Traders use this indicator for a wide variety of strategies:

• trend-following systems
• moving average crossover strategies
• multi-timeframe analysis
• pullback entries in trending markets
• dynamic support and resistance tracking
• filtering trade signals from other indicators

Because multiple MA algorithms are available, the indicator can adapt to different market conditions and trading styles.

Technical Notes

  • Supports multi-timeframe calculations without manual chart switching
  • Efficient implementation optimized for TakeProfit's Indie engine
  • Only the selected moving averages are computed internally, improving performance
  • Tilson T3 is implemented using a mathematically equivalent formulation for improved efficiency
