MACD + SMA 200 Enhanced — Trend Regime & Signal Indicator

MACD + SMA 200 Enhanced is an improved Indie implementation of the classic MACD trend-confirmation concept originally popularized by ChartArt.
The indicator combines MACD momentum analysis with a long-term trend filter to help traders identify high-probability trend phases and potential entry signals.

The core idea behind the indicator is simple:
momentum signals from MACD become more reliable when they are aligned with the long-term market trend, typically defined by a 200-period moving average.

This enhanced Indie version expands the original concept with trend regime detection, optional volatility and strength filters, and multi-timeframe confirmation, making it suitable for modern crypto, forex, and stock markets.

Core Concept

The indicator evaluates market structure using two main components:

Momentum

  • MACD fast and slow moving averages
  • MACD signal line and histogram
  • Momentum shifts detected through histogram crossovers

Trend Filter

  • A configurable long-term moving average (default: SMA 200)
  • Trend direction determined by both price position and moving average slope

By combining these elements, the indicator highlights moments when momentum aligns with the broader trend, which often corresponds to stronger market moves.

Market Regime Detection

One of the main improvements over the original strategy is a five-level trend regime model that visually categorizes the current market environment.

The chart background dynamically displays:

  • Strong Uptrend
  • Weak Uptrend
  • Neutral / Sideways
  • Weak Downtrend
  • Strong Downtrend

This regime detection helps traders quickly identify whether the market is trending or ranging and adjust their strategies accordingly.

Signal Logic

The indicator highlights potential signals when MACD momentum shifts in the direction of the prevailing trend.

Typical bullish conditions include:

  • MACD histogram crossing above zero
  • MACD above the signal line
  • Fast moving average above slow moving average
  • Price trading above the long-term trend average

Bearish signals follow the inverse logic.

Signal markers appear directly on the price chart to make entries easier to spot.

Advanced Filters

To reduce false signals during sideways markets, the indicator optionally includes additional confirmation filters.

ADX Trend Strength Filter

The Average Directional Index (ADX) can be used to ensure signals appear only when the market shows sufficient trend strength.

ATR Volatility Filter

The Average True Range (ATR) filter removes signals during low-volatility environments where breakouts are less reliable.

Multi-Timeframe Trend Confirmation

An optional higher-timeframe trend filter confirms that signals align with the broader market direction.

For example:

  • signals on 1H
  • trend confirmation from 1D

This approach is commonly used by professional traders to reduce noise.

Flexible Moving Average System

Unlike the original script that relied solely on SMA, this version allows multiple moving-average types for the trend filter:

  • SMA
  • EMA
  • WMA
  • Hull Moving Average (HMA)

This flexibility allows traders to adapt the indicator to different markets and trading styles.

Visual Tools

The indicator includes several visual elements designed to make trend analysis easier:

  • Trend ribbon between moving averages
  • Dynamic background regime coloring
  • Momentum-based bar coloring
  • Bullish and bearish signal markers
  • Configurable visibility for chart elements

Together these features provide a clear overview of trend direction, momentum shifts, and potential entry zones.

Typical Use Cases

Traders commonly use this indicator for:

  • trend confirmation
  • momentum-based entries
  • market regime detection
  • trend following strategies
  • crypto and stock swing trading

It can be applied across multiple timeframes, from intraday trading to longer-term analysis.

Future Strategy Version

This indicator is based on the logic of the well-known MACD + SMA 200 strategy.
A dedicated Indie strategy version will be available once strategy support exits beta, allowing traders to run full backtests and automated strategy simulations using the same core logic.

Summary

MACD + SMA 200 Enhanced extends a classic trend-following concept with modern trading features such as:

  • trend regime classification
  • optional volatility and strength filters
  • multi-timeframe confirmation
  • configurable moving averages
  • improved visual trend analysis

The result is a practical tool for traders who want to combine momentum signals with long-term trend structure in a clear and flexible indicator.
